Surrendering a Doberman

Owner Surrender Procedures
Step #1 – Contact DRON via the form link below
We must have adequate notice from you. Our intake team will work as quickly as they can to qualify the surrender and get your dog into the program if it is accepted, but it could take some time.
Please include all information requested on the form. This will help us quickly evaluate the Doberman and find a foster home that is matched to the needs of the dog.
We do ask for a donation to cover any kenneling costs, re-homing, adoption promotion, and care costs.
TIMING: PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT TO DROP YOUR DOG OFF THE SAME DAY YOU NOTIFY US.
The process may take some time. While we strive to place all dogs into foster homes, we do not have a DRON boarding facility. Therefore, we need to first qualify the surrender and find a potential suitable boarding location or foster home. Your dog will likely go to a partner kennel facility initially. We prioritize rescuing dogs from high-kill shelters, as those dogs have no other options.
Step #2 – Complete the Owner Surrender Intake Form Below
The more complete you make the form, the better we can assess the dog and re-home it. We will likely request more information after we have reviewed your form.
Step #3 – Meeting Your Dog
You may be asked to drive your dog to the nearest DRON intake team member for an assessment of their temperament. Please note that aggressive behavior may prevent your dog from being accepted into the program.
Step #4 – Medical Information Checklist
DRON is a nonprofit rescue and operates mostly on donations to cover our many costs. It helps the rescue greatly if you have your dog up to date on the following items. We will not turn your dog away if you cannot afford to do all of these things, but please do all that you can to help.
Please provide the following to us with your Owner Surrender Intake Form:
-
Current vaccinations (DHLPP, Rabies, Bordetella)
-
Current heartworm test
-
Note if the dog is spayed or neutered
Step #5 – Fees/Misc.
Please provide a donation to the rescue to help us with your dog until we can find a new home for it. The minimum requested donation is $200 cash only. If you have anything that would make your dog more comfortable while it is with us, such as toys, food, a crate, leash, etc., please bring that with your dog.
RETURNING A DOG THAT YOU ADOPTED FROM DRON
Contact us to discuss the return and reasons for it. We usually accept the return of any DRON Doberman, but it does depend upon the reason. We may require the steps listed above depending upon the amount of time that has passed since adoption.
Owner Surrender Procedures
IMPORTANT: Please note that we are not a general surrender shelter and relay on volunteer foster homes & only accept Doberman breed surrenders after a qualification process. We do not accept drop off surrenders.
At Doberman Rescue of Nebraska, we understand that the decision to surrender a beloved pet is an incredibly emotional and difficult one. Dobermans are known for their loyalty and strong bonds with their families, and letting go can feel like losing a part of yourself. We also recognize that this transition can be very stressful and confusing for your dog. When a Doberman has bonded closely with you, being separated from their familiar people, home, and routine can cause anxiety, sadness, and behavioral changes as they try to understand what has happened.
Because of this, we take extra care to evaluate and approve surrendered dogs through the process as gently as possible. Our volunteers and foster families are experienced in helping Dobermans cope with this kind of loss. We focus on providing consistency, calm handling, and reassurance so your dog can begin to feel safe again. With time, structure, and patient care, most dogs are able to adjust, rebuild trust, and form new, healthy bonds in their next home.
