APPLY TO ADOPT

Are you Ready for a Doberman?

Before you adopt a Doberman, please ask yourself a few important questions:

  • Why do I want a Doberman?
We’re not security systems. We’re loyal, sensitive family members who want to live with you, not just guard your house.

  • Is a Doberman right for me?
We’re smart, energetic working dogs. We need daily exercise, mental stimulation, and to live primarily indoors. A fenced yard helps keep us safe.

  • Do I have time and patience?
We can’t read your mind. Training takes time, consistency, and kindness. If you won’t invest in training a
nd relationship, a Doberman (or any dog) isn’t the right choice.

  • Can I commit for life?
We live 10–12 years or more. We need food, vet care, and extra help as we age. Please don’t give us up when we get old or inconvenient.

  • Dobermans thrive with Active Lifestyles

  • Dobermans have high energy and a strong working drive. We’re athletes, not couch potatoes. Most of us need:

    • Daily vigorous exercise – brisk walks, runs, or active play, not just a quick trip to the yard.

    • Mental work – training, puzzle toys, and jobs to do so we don’t get bored and destructive.

    • Time with you – we’re “Velcro dogs” who want to be involved in your life, not left alone all day.

    • If you enjoy being active and want a dog who can keep up—and then curl up beside you— a Doberman can be an amazing match. If you prefer a very low‑energy companion, this probably isn’t the right breed.

ARE YOU READY FOR A DOBERMAN

Hello! My name is Daniel Riley and I was adopted from Doberman Rescue of Nebraska in March 2006.

I live with my beautiful sisters, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly (Gracie). I’m one of the lucky ones. Many Dobermans like me are still waiting for a safe, loving home. Maybe you’ll be the one to help a friend of mine.

Before you bring one of us home, there are some things I’d like you to think about.

Please don’t choose a Doberman just for protection. Yes, we were bred to be protectors, and most of us will stand by our families if there’s danger, but we want to be family members first, not alarm systems. I’m a working dog, and I want to share your life, not just guard your house.

We Dobermans are very smart and full of energy. We learn quickly, but we need you to work with us and keep our minds busy. We don’t like to sit around all day with nothing to do. We need daily exercise, training, and time with you. Because of our short coats, we need to live indoors and only go out for reasonable stretches. A fenced yard helps keep us safe when we run and play.

I can’t read your mind. If you don’t teach me your rules, I’ll make up my own, and you might not like them. Training takes time and patience, just like raising a child. If you show me kindly and consistently what you want, I will try my very best to please you for the rest of my life.

You also need time for me. I can’t stay alone for days while you travel. I need someone to feed me, let me out, and give me company. If you have children, please help them learn to be gentle and respectful; fast, loud little humans can be scary for some of us.

I do cost money: food, treats, yearly vet visits, and sometimes medicine or emergency care. As I get older, I may need more help, not less. Please don’t give me up when I’m old. I might live 10–12 years or more, and I’ll love you every single day.

Most of all, remember what we love to do: walk, run, play, chew good toys, learn new things, and then curl up next to you. If you’re ready for that kind of commitment, a Doberman like me will give you a heart full of love in return.

Thank you for thinking about one of my friends—and for helping us find our forever homes.
